Long lived the King – The King is Dead. All hail the King that was DMOZ.
Started back on the 5th of June 1998 as The Gnuhoo directory, a mere 2 years after Google’s founding year of 1996 by Bob Truel and Rich Skrenta while working at Sun Microsystems as engineers. DMOZ was the directory to be listed on. The envy and desire of all web masters and online marketers alike. While it might ‘only’ have been a human based crawler/directory, it was one of the most sought-after places on the internet to have a followed back link from.
That is, until now. Just as all good things don’t last forever, it seems so too is the case with the latest announcement from DMOZ and this is branded clearly at the top of their site’s home page. According to their site, DMOZ officially came to an end on the 17th of March 2017.
One of the big questions, is how much of an impact the closure of DMOZ will this have for all the sites listed on it, and this is yet to be seen. Affecting amongst a number of things such as Page Range and Domain Authority.
With a Domain Authority score of 91/100, how will the loss of this authoritative backlink affect website’s own Domain Authority Score and overall rankings. Watch this space as we report back on some findings…
